Once numbering is on for a page, it looks after itself: someone inserts a section in the middle, and everything below it is renumbered a few seconds after they publish. If an edit doesn't change the numbering, the page is left alone entirely — so nobody gets a stream of "page updated" emails for a fixed typo. And if you ever want the numbers gone, one click takes out exactly what was added and nothing else.
